

While the UNSC could slow the Banished down, they couldn't win without a plan. On one side was Captain Cutter and the bulk of his men, and on the other was Spartan Alice-130, who performed a number of strategic assaults. Atriox's forces were hit on two fronts during the war. The UNSC and the Banished fought over the Arc in numerous engagements in an effort to control the Installation. However, their new base soon came under attack from the UNSC Spirit of Fire. Atriox and his troops eventually found their way to the Arc and established their base, after slaughtering a UNSC outpost. He managed to ally himself with Elites who had been hunting them and then convinced an Elite ship to join his forces. However, Atriox instead proved himself to be very different from Tartarus, the former brute chieftain. Many of the remaining Brutes joined out of fear due to many of the Elites hunting them down in revenge. The Great Schism tore the former Covenant empire apart, which allowed the Banished more freedom and more opportunities for recruitment. The Banished spent most of their time performing hit and runs against the Covenant but weren't strong enough to challenge the empire fully. Atriox and his Brutes managed to escape and began a life as pirates.

While rebellion wasn't unheard of, the Grunt rebellion being the most infamous, these insurrections usually ended relatively easily with the help of an Arbiter.

Eventually, Atriox and his men turned on the Covenant. Atriox was one such brute and, as he watched his packs get slaughtered around him, he began to grow disillusioned with the Covenant and their methods. The Banished and their leaders were members of Brute packs that had been forced to be front-line troopers during the war. Instead, the group is something of a mercenary company that fought the Covenant during the human-Covenant war. Now, it seems that the Banished will return in Halo Infinite as the game's primary foe - but who are they? The Banished, and their leader Atriox, are a force that holds no allegiance to the Covenant that mainline Halo players know. However, this group proved to be very different. Halo Wars 2had players campaign against what seemed to be an offshoot of the normal Covenant troops.
